Identity and Access Management for the Next Decade

Catch Them in the Act: CEP for Realtime Ecommerce Influence

Big data analytics play a key role in the retail industry where common use cases include product recommendations, targeted marketing, dynamic offers, product selection, and A/B testing based on product placement. Most current systems use batch processing technologies like MapReduce to process transaction logs a few hours later and extract useful insights. Although such insights are useful for trends that last a long time, they often come in too late. On one hand, the store cannot act on any short term trends (e.g. very common in auction use cases) and even long-term trends would have progressed by the time action is taken. This session will focus on a sample system and explain in detail how a retail store can incorporate real-time updates into recommendation, product offers, and other analytics using WSO2 Complex Event Processor. Our system can react to short-term trends, provide dynamic offers within milliseconds, and react immediately to any new trends.

State of Arizona’s Enterprise Services Platform (AESP) Journey

There are many opportunities to improve how state government communicates with its stakeholders. Citizens and employees also need access to secure, personalized services. In particular, citizens and businesses have a fundamental problem navigating government’s myriad of resources across hundreds of different websites. It can be difficult to locate information about services available in a particular neighborhood, to find the correct forms to start a business, or to get the status of a license application.

This presentation will cover how the State of Arizona built the Arizona Enterprise Services Platform (AESP) – Arizona’s first-ever, enterprise services platform, a critical first step in delivering effective services to all Arizonans in a new way. Built on top of AWS cloud, using WSO2 product suite and other open source components, AESP provides secure, reusable components to increase the velocity of service delivery. AESP is an extensible system that allows agencies to develop websites and applications without having to build solutions from scratch. The capabilities include identity management (e.g. single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, etc.), analytics, payment processing, integration to the State financial system, and a business rules engine, among others. Future capabilities include forms management, workflow management, document management, digital signature and subscription / notification capabilities.

Gilbarco Cloud: harnessing WSO2 flexibility to build world class SaaS offering for the Petroleum Retail industry

Gilbarco Veeder-Root (GVR) is the world leader in automation for the Petroleum and Convenience industry. GVR provides ‘anything’ related to gas stations and Convenience stores: gasoline dispensers, Point of Sale controllers, pay@pump solutions, back end data collection, fuel logistics management, underground tank fuel level monitoring are among the most important and visible aspects of this business. Gilbarco has a huge installed base around the world, its equipment is present in more than 500,000 gas stations in all continents. In 2012 Gilbarco decided to start building the ‘GVR Cloud’ as the going forward infrastructure for both remote control, predictive diagnostics and additional added value services like Mobile Payment, advertisement dispatching and 1:1 marketing messaging, possible only through scalable cloud technology. GVR selected AWS for hosting and WSO2 as middleware. This selection was driven by WSO2 modern architecture, flexibility and scalable business model. Since then, the GVR Cloud team has worked side by side with WSO2 experts and eventually has built all the core blocks based on WSO2 technology: API manager, for external access to web services, IS for secure access to the Cloud space, ESB for internal orchestration, IS extensions to allow a hierarchical access to remote user, multitenancy to support the very many and fragmented customers around the world. Going forward ,GVR plans to leverage WSO2 capability to interconnect external Cloud components, for example extended analytics/ BIG DATA tools. This presentation will cover GVR business scenario and the core architecture of GVR cloud, highlighting where WSO2 has made (and it is making) the difference in building a clear competitive advantage.

Apache Stratos/WSO2 Private PaaS is a highly-extensible Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that helps run all WSO2 Products, Apache Tomcat, PHP, and MySQL; it can also be extended to support many more environments on all major cloud infrastructures. In-Memory Computing

Traditionally, big data is mostly read from disks and processed. However, most big data systems are latency bound, which means often the CPU sits idle waiting for data to arrive. This problem is more prevalent with use cases like graph searches that need to randomly access different parts of datasets. In-memory computing proposes an alternative model where data is loaded or stored in-memory and processed instead of processing them from the disk. Although such designs cost more in terms of memory, sometimes resulting systems can have faster order of magnitudes (e.g. 1000X), which could lead to savings in the long run. With rapidly falling memory prices, this difference is reducing by the day. Furthermore, in-memory computing can enable use cases like ad hoc analysis over a large set of data that was not possible earlier. This talk will provide an overview of in-memory technology and discuss how WSO2 technologies like complex event processing that can be used to build in-memory solutions. It will also provide an overview of upcoming improvements in the WSO2 platform.

Analyzing a Soccer Game with WSO2 CEP

Mobile devices, sensors, and GPSs are driving demand to handle big data in both batch and real time. This presentation discusses how we used complex event processing (CEP) and MapReduce-based technologies to track and process data from a soccer match as part of the annual DEBS event processing challenge. In 2013, the challenge included a data set generated by a real soccer match in which sensors were placed in the soccer ball and players’ shoes. This session will review how we used CEP to address the DEBS challenge and achieve throughput in excess of 100,000 events/sec. It will also examine how we extended the solution to conduct batch processing with business activity monitoring (BAM) using the same framework, enabling users to obtain both instant analytics as well as more detailed batch processing-based results.

Real Time Clinical Decision Support and Comparative Outcomes Analysis Using Big Data

The Cleveland Clinic is ranked among the top 3 hospitals in the US. The health system comprises 10 acute care hospitals in Ohio and Florida. The Clinical Intelligence Platform is an internally developed application that combines Big Data storage, stream and batch processing to provide decision support to clinicians. A data-driven approach enables the clinic to identify opportunities and mitigate risk in a timely manner. The platform was implemented using WSO2 ESB and WSO2 DSS. ActiveMQ is used as a distributed message broker. Apache Cassandra 2.0.6 is used for storage. Real-time analytics are provided by WSO2 CEP along with custom extensions to handle healthcare data. Batch processing using internally developed application enables the clinic to analyze large volumes of unstructured data in real time. This session will discuss how the WSO2 stack has enabled the integration of healthcare (HL7) data with short development time with scalability and high availability.

Building upon existing infrastructure for Mobile Applications with WSO2

In 2013 Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) wanted to enter the mobile application space. The mobile app was for their customers to manage FCSAmerica lending accounts. In the past 13 years, FCSAmerica has built an SOA infrastructure for internal applications, which included services for customer authentication, lending account, and remote check depositing. These services were protected by a firewall inside their DMZ Zone. FCSAmerica needed something better, and needed to change the thought process to create the best mobile experience, such as the correct API management implementation for its environment for the FCSAmerica app. The API Management solutions had to meet FCSAmerica’s requirements like as maintenance, data integration, security, and performance. And this is where WS02 came in with the best fit. This talk will focus on the challenges faced and subsequent benefits for FCSAmerica; security, ease of deployment, and ease of development technical support with WS02.

Building a Multi-tenant Computational Science as a Service Platform with API Manager

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) has some of the most powerful scientific computing resources in the world including Stampede, the world’s 7th most powerful supercomputer. Historically, accessing these resources has required use of the terminal and command line expertise. The Agave “science as a service” platform aims to change all of that by making HPC and cloud resources available through RESTful web services. Agave is a set of open source APIs and developer tools that can be used to build web and mobile portals and other applications with powerful HPC capabilities. Agave leverages WSO2 API Manager for identity, authorization and various API Management features. In this talk we will discuss Agave and its use of API Manager, some of the benefits as well as some of the challenges we faced getting into production. We’ll also discuss our use of technologies such as Docker and Ansible for automating the deployment and management of our infrastructure.

Apache Stratos/WSO2 Private PaaS with Docker Integration

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is a technology designed to make devops easier and allow developers to focus on application development. The PaaS takes care of provisioning, scaling, HA, and other cloud management aspects. Apache Stratos is a PaaS codebase developed in Apache and designed to create a highly productive developer environment while also supporting powerful deployment options.

Docker, CoreOS, and Kubernetes are latest cloud technologies, and integration with them makes Stratos a more scalable and flexible PaaS, thereby enabling developers/devops to build their cloud applications with ease.

Deploying for High Availability and Horizontal Scaling
